Harold
I have aligned the baseboard on my early model 138. I used the 2
mirror method that I first heard of on this news group some 3 or 4 years
ago ?. Remove the lens then remove the head (4 large screws) to give
access to the top of the neg carrier's platform. I initially leveled
the lens stage using a spirit level and also the baseboard ( mine has a
ball and socket uni pivot arrangement). To get them precisely parallel
place one mirror (on the center of the baseboard looking up and one on
the other on the lens stage facing down (lens removed).
The top mirror needs a clear circle in it's center about 0.5" diameter.
I used a touch of caustic soda drain cleaner to remove the aluminium
(aluminum) reflective coating to get the clear circle. Mark an X in the
clear circle with a fine marking pen. Standing on a step ladder view
thru the clear circle to the reflection of the X on the lower mirror on
the baseboard. If the baseboard and neg carrier platform are parallel
then you will get a single reflection. If not you will see multiple
reflections. The method works although the quite images are dim so I
used a very small lamp glued in the center of the X. One of the very
small LED's could be used. Once you align the baseboard set the 2 point
mechanism that acts as a reference should you nead to tilt it for
corrective purposes. I have not aligned my lens stage yet as I did not
realize that you could till I read this thread last week. (thanks)
